About the programme

Basic General Nursing is the route to registration as a nurse in Nigeria. Over three years you move from foundation sciences to full clinical responsibility under supervision, sitting the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria professional examination at the end.

Teaching is split between the lecture halls, the demonstration rooms where every procedure is rehearsed on manikins before a patient, and clinical postings where you nurse real patients alongside qualified staff.

  • Fundamentals of nursing: vital signs, medication, wound care, hygiene
  • Medical, surgical, paediatric, mental health and community nursing
  • Patient assessment, care planning and documentation
  • Ethics, communication and professional conduct

Entry requirements

  1. 1Five credit passes at WAEC, NECO or GCE in no more than two sittings, including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
  2. 2JAMB score of 140 or above
  3. 3At least 17 years old at admission
  4. 4Nigerian by birth
  5. 5Pass the college's computer-based test and interview

Where it leads

  • Sit the NMCN professional examination
  • Practise as a Registered Nurse
  • Progress to midwifery or post-basic specialities
